There is still very little known about its capabilities, but will post as things come in.
The Defiant has several abilities. First, it will get your more edicts from solo armadas when it is participating in them. Then, it has a buff ability it can use on other ships to make them stronger against both solo and regular armadas, depending on the research you do for it. If someone else's Defiant buffs one of your ships, the buff is based on YOUR research, not on the player who did it. The research is in the Starship tree. This ability uses Ablative Amplifiers as a currency.
The bottom row of research is for normal armadas, the top for solo armadas. You use Subspace Transcievers for this research.
It also is stronger against solo armadas than normal ships.
